Badaling Great Wall Beijing

a view of the great wall of china

Tickets and booking

Admission is seasonal. From April 1 to October 31 (peak season) an adult wall ticket costs 40 RMB and a concession ticket 20 RMB; from November 1 to March 31 (off season) prices drop to 35 RMB and 17.5 RMB. Half-price tickets go to full-time students aged 18 to 25 (inclusive) at university level or below, adult-education students excluded, on presentation of valid ID.

Free entry applies to visitors under 18, disabled visitors (including those with military disability certificates), active-duty service members, seniors aged 60 and over, and fire and rescue personnel, each with valid ID; note that military welfare cards do not count as valid documentation. The wall ticket covers the wall only, with the cableway, toboggan and other in-park transport priced separately. Ticket sales stop at 16:30 in the peak season and 16:00 in the off season, and the site cautions that published prices are for reference and subject to same-day disclosure, so travellers should confirm the current policy on arrival.

Entrance and routes

Badaling sits at Exit 58 of the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway in Yanqing District, Beijing. All public bus services, routes 877 and 879 plus the dedicated Badaling tourist bus line, terminate at the Badaling Great Wall bus stop, from which the entrance is roughly a 400-meter walk.

Inside the scenic area, a cableway and a toboggan operate as separately ticketed transport, so travellers can choose between walking onto the wall or riding part of the way; the standard wall ticket includes neither. Decide at the gate which combination suits your legs and your budget.

Photo spots

The site’s current visitor information does not flag specific photo viewpoints, so travellers plan shots along the wall itself: the restored ramparts, the watchtowers and the long sightlines down the walkway are the natural frames. The peak-season opening at 06:30 delivers the earliest and softest light of the day, while the 17:00 close means late-afternoon visitors catch low sun in the final hour.

Because ticket windows shut at 16:30 in peak months (16:00 off season), anyone arriving late should head straight onto the wall to make the most of the remaining light. The roughly 400-meter walk from the bus stop also offers approach angles on the wall before the climb begins.

Timing and crowds

Opening hours split by season: April 1 to October 31, 06:30-17:00 with ticket sales ending at 16:30; November 1 to March 31, 07:30-16:30 with ticket sales ending at 16:00. The suggested on-site duration is three hours or more, so travellers arriving at opening get the fullest window on the wall.

The off season trades an hour of morning access for lower ticket prices. Whatever the season, same-day ticket buyers need to clear the windows before the cutoff, which falls 30 minutes before closing in both seasons.

Walking and effort

Budget at least three hours on site, the official suggested duration, which points to sustained walking rather than a quick lookout stop. The presence of a cableway and a toboggan inside the scenic area, both ticketed separately, is a fair signal of the climbing involved: travellers who want to spare their legs can ride part of the route instead of walking it all.

Sturdy shoes and a steady pace matter more than speed here. The wall ticket alone buys the walk, and the transport add-ons are optional extras rather than necessities.

Getting there

Three bus services reach the wall: routes 877 and 879, plus the dedicated Badaling tourist bus line. All stop at the Badaling Great Wall bus stop, about 400 meters from the entrance, making the final approach a short walk.

For travellers arriving by private car or taxi, the address is Exit 58 of the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway, Yanqing District, Beijing, a clear landmark to give any driver.

Cost breakdown

A basic visit costs the wall ticket alone: 40 RMB adult or 20 RMB concession in the peak season (April 1 to October 31), or 35 RMB adult and 17.5 RMB concession in the off season (November 1 to March 31). Full-time students aged 18 to 25 at university level or below, adult education excluded, pay half price with valid ID, while under-18s, disabled visitors (including military-disabled), active-duty military, seniors aged 60 and over, and fire and rescue personnel enter free with valid ID.

The main add-on is in-park transport: the cableway and toboggan are excluded from the wall ticket and priced separately, and current figures do not appear in the site’s ticket policy, so confirm them at the gate. Bus fares to the site are also separate and are not listed in the ticket information. The site notes that all prices are for reference and subject to same-day disclosure.
