9 Day Yunnan Itinerary

A view overlooking Dukezong Ancient Town and the skyline of Shangri-La from Guishan Park, Jiantang Town, Diqing, Yunnan, China

Why this route

These nine days run one line northwest across Yunnan: Kunming at the rail hub, Dali on the west shore of Erhai Lake, Lijiang under Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and Shangri-La up on the plateau. The route only moves forward — every leg ends closer to the mountains — and the altitude rises in steps, which is exactly the order you want: the plateau town sits at the end of the trip, after your body has climbed through 1,900 and 2,400 metres, not at the start.

Four anchors define the line. The Stone Forest anchors Kunming; the Three Pagodas with the lakeshore of Erhai Lake anchor Dali; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain anchors Lijiang; and the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery anchors Shangri-La. The old towns in between — Kunming’s lanes, Dali Old City, the Old Town of Lijiang, Dukezong — are the connective tissue, and each is walkable in an evening.

The day split gives Kunming two, Dali two, Lijiang two and Shangri-La two, with the ninth day for the flight out. Kunming earns its two days because the Stone Forest sits outside the city; Dali and Lijiang each pair one old-town day with one lake-or-mountain day; Shangri-La takes one monastery-and-town day and one park day. Nothing here needs a guide or a multi-day trek, which is what keeps the whole loop inside nine days.

Day by day

Days 1 and 2 belong to Kunming. Day 1 is the gentle arrival day: the heron-filled ponds of Green Lake Park, the timber halls of Yuantong Temple, and the evening food lanes of Guandu Ancient Town. Day 2 goes out to the Stone Forest and back, with the lakeshore of Dian Lake or the Yunnan Provincial Museum as the afternoon half.

Days 3 and 4 move to Dali. Day 3 walks Dali Old City — Renmin Road for the cafés and street food — and ends under the Three Pagodas. Day 4 follows the west shore of Erhai Lake: the morning market and Bai houses of Xizhou Town, tie-dye in Zhoucheng Village, and the Cangshan chairlift if the sky is clear.

Days 5 and 6 are Lijiang. Day 5 covers the Old Town of Lijiang on foot — Sifang Street, the Mu Palace, and the rooftops from Lion Hill at dusk. Day 6 is the mountain: the Glacier Park cableway on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain or the turquoise terraces of Blue Moon Valley below it, with the murals at Baisha on the way home and Shuhe Old Town for the last evening.

Days 7 and 8 climb to Shangri-La. Day 7 is the overland leg, broken at Tiger Leaping Gorge where the Jinsha River squeezes between two walls of rock; arrive in time for Dukezong and the giant prayer wheel on Guishan Park. Day 8 pairs the morning at Ganden Sumtseling Monastery with the lakes and boardwalks of Potatso National Park — Shudu Lake is the easy circuit — and the grasslands of Napa Hai if the season is right.

Day 9 carries the flight out. Shangri-La’s airport connects through Kunming on most itineraries, so the return leg usually starts here whatever the onward plan.

Trade-offs

The two-day Kunming block is the first place to shorten if the trip must fit eight days: run straight out to the Stone Forest on the arrival day and hand the saved day to Lijiang, where the Glacier Park cableway queues reward an early start. Cutting further means dropping Shangri-La entirely — the line still works as a six-day Kunming-Dali-Lijiang arc, just without the monastery and the plateau.

The middle of the route flexes by half-days. Dali’s second day can shrink to a morning if the Cangshan lift is clouded in; Lijiang’s Baisha and Black Dragon Pool Park are additions rather than defaults. What should not flex is Shangri-La’s order: the monastery belongs to the morning and the park to the afternoon, because the afternoon wind on the plateau is a real thing.

The legs are easier than they look on a map. Kunming to Dali and Dali to Lijiang run on fast rail through the lake country, and the last hop to Shangri-La is the only long road transfer — broken, as planned, at Tiger Leaping Gorge. Book the mountain cableway early on Day 6 and treat the plateau day with respect: Shangri-La sits above 3,000 metres, so keep Day 8 unhurried and let the ninth day absorb whatever the altitude still owes you.
