Kunming 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

The most-travelled Yunnan routes pair open water with old streets, and this five-day plan follows that logic from start to finish. Dian Lake opens the trip in Kunming, Erhai Lake dominates the Dali leg, and Lashi Lake Wetland Park closes it in Lijiang, while the connective tissue is heritage quarters: Kunming Old Street, Dali Old City, Xizhou Town, Shuanglang Ancient Town and the Old Town of Lijiang. The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain supply the monumental landmarks, so the whole route reads as one continuous thread of lakes, old towns and a snow-mountain finish.

The day split paces that thread. Day 1 is a compact city sampler — two hours at Dian Lake, two hours at Kunming Old Street, with Yunnan Provincial Museum rounding things out. Day 2 stays light in Dali, with five timed hours split between Dali Old City and The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda, building rest ahead of Day 3, the densest day of the five: an eight-stop Erhai Lake circuit totalling thirteen timed hours. Day 4 then drops to a single three-hour stop, the Old Town of Lijiang, a built-in breather before Day 5 pairs Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with Lashi Lake Wetland Park at three hours each.

Day by day

Day 1 — Kunming. Two hours at Dian Lake come first, followed by two hours in Kunming Old Street, with Yunnan Provincial Museum rounding out the day. Four timed hours in all make this an easy opening.

Day 2 — Dali. The route shifts to Dali and slows down. Three hours in Dali Old City come first, then two hours at The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda — five unhurried timed hours before the big circuit.

Day 3 — the Erhai Lake circuit. The fullest day of the route. Erhai Lake sets the frame, and the stops run in sequence: two hours at the Three Saints Island on Erhai Lake, one hour at the S-Bend photo spot at Panxi, two hours in Xizhou Town, one hour at Haishe Ecological Park, two hours at Ideal State Tourism Resort Town, two hours at Little Putuo Island, and a three-hour finish in Shuanglang Ancient Town. Thirteen timed hours in all — the sort of day that rewards an early start.

Day 4 — Lijiang. The lightest day on the plan: the Old Town of Lijiang is the only stop, with three hours allotted, leaving the rest of the day loose.

Day 5 — Lijiang. The finale balances mountain and water. Three hours at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain come first, followed by three hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park — six timed hours that close the trip on the route’s twin themes.

Trade-offs

Day 3 is where the schedule pinches: thirteen timed hours around Erhai Lake before counting the lake itself. The cleanest adjustment is to cut the two one-hour stops — the S-Bend photo spot at Panxi and Haishe Ecological Park — which reclaims two hours without touching the day’s anchors, Xizhou Town and Shuanglang Ancient Town; travellers unmoved by resort-town styling can drop Ideal State Tourism Resort Town for two more. The schedule flexes on Day 4, where the Old Town of Lijiang is the sole stop at three hours, so a slow morning there costs the route nothing.

Travellers who want a gentler finish should simplify Day 5: keep the three hours at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and skip Lashi Lake Wetland Park, halving the day’s commitment. In Kunming, anyone running behind can skip Yunnan Provincial Museum, the most flexible item on Day 1, and keep the two-hour pairing of Dian Lake and Kunming Old Street.
