Why this route

One theme carries this loop: the land as the headline act. The stops read as a survey of earth shaped by water, wind and human hands — the Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest Scenic Area and Yuepu Hollow, the red fields of Dongchuan Red Land, the colored sands of the Colorful Sand Forest Scenic Area, the peaks and cascades of Jinji Peak Cluster (Temporarily Closed) and Jiulong Waterfalls, and the terraced slopes of Yuanyang Hani Terrace. Water frames the route — Puzhehei mid-loop, then Fuxian Lake Scenic Area, Gushan Island and Dianchi Lake Haigeng Park at the close — while the Yuanmou Man Site, the Yuanmou Man Museum, Bisezhai Village and Jianshui Ancient City supply the human layer.

The day split turns that theme into a workable schedule. Days 1 and 2 concentrate the Yuanmou sights — the Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest Scenic Area, the Yuanmou Man Site and the Yuanmou Man Museum — with Yuepu Hollow slotting into day 2, and days 3 and 4 each pair two stops: two 3-hour sights on day 3, two 1-3 hour sights on day 4. Days 5 through 8 then carry a single stop each — Puzhehei, Bisezhai Village, Yuanyang Hani Terrace and Jianshui Ancient City — with the terraces and the ancient city left open-ended, since neither carries a fixed visit duration. Day 9 pairs two 3-hour lake stops, Fuxian Lake Scenic Area and Gushan Island, and day 10 closes with a single 1-3 hour stop at Dianchi Lake Haigeng Park. The result: the landform sights sit in the first four days, four consecutive single-stop days hold the middle, and the lakes carry the finish.

Day by day

Day 1. The route opens at the Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest Scenic Area (1-3 hours), then moves on to the Yuanmou Man Site (2 hours).

Day 2. The Yuanmou Man Museum (2 hours) comes first, followed by Yuepu Hollow (1-3 hours).

Day 3. Two three-hour landscapes share the day: Dongchuan Red Land (3 hours) and the Colorful Sand Forest Scenic Area (3 hours).

Day 4. Jinji Peak Cluster (Temporarily Closed), 1-3 hours, and Jiulong Waterfalls, 1-3 hours, make up the day; with the peak cluster flagged as temporarily closed, confirm its status before building the day around it.

Day 5. A single stop, Puzhehei (1-3 hours), with the rest of the day left open.

Day 6. Another single-stop day, this one at Bisezhai Village (1-3 hours).

Day 7. The whole day goes to Yuanyang Hani Terrace, the only stop of the day and one of just two sights on the route with no fixed visit duration, so the schedule here is entirely open-ended.

Day 8. Jianshui Ancient City takes the day, again with no duration specified in the plan.

Day 9. Back to a two-stop format on the water: Fuxian Lake Scenic Area (3 hours) and Gushan Island (3 hours).

Day 10. The loop finishes with one stop, Dianchi Lake Haigeng Park (1-3 hours), a lakeside wind-down after the long circuit.

Trade-offs

The plan’s slack sits in two places, and both are where it should flex. Every 1-3 hour stop — the Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest Scenic Area, Yuepu Hollow, Jinji Peak Cluster (Temporarily Closed), Jiulong Waterfalls, Puzhehei, Bisezhai Village and Dianchi Lake Haigeng Park — can be run at either end of its range, and days 7 and 8 carry no fixed durations at all, so Yuanyang Hani Terrace and Jianshui Ancient City can stretch or hand back time as the loop demands. Anyone trimming the itinerary should cut from the back rather than the middle: dropping day 10’s Dianchi Lake Haigeng Park, or cutting Gushan Island so that day 9 becomes a single Fuxian Lake Scenic Area stop, shortens the route without touching its landform core.

Two kinds of traveller should simplify in opposite ways. Those chasing landscapes over prehistory can skip the Yuanmou Man Site and the Yuanmou Man Museum (2 hours each) and fold days 1 and 2 into a single day built around the Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest Scenic Area and Yuepu Hollow. Photographers should do the opposite: protect Dongchuan Red Land on day 3 and Yuanyang Hani Terrace on day 7, and let the lake stops go first if time runs short. Note, too, that with Jinji Peak Cluster (Temporarily Closed) flagged shut, day 4 already works as a Jiulong Waterfalls day — treat the freed hours as buffer rather than filling them.
