Why this route
The five days trace a single arc from Shanghai’s historic core to Hangzhou’s lakeside calm. The first two days stay inside Shanghai and split the city by mood: Day 1 concentrates the old-city and riverside icons - THE CITY TEMPLE OF SHANGHAI, Yu Garden, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street and The Bund - while Day 2 shifts to shopping streets and lane districts, pairing Xintiandi and Huaihai Road Commercial Street with Wukang Road and Tianzifang. Day 3 then breaks from sightseeing entirely, giving a single-stop day to Shanghai Disneyland.
From Day 4 the route changes city and tempo. West Lake opens the Hangzhou half on its own, and the final day balances culture and nature with LingYin Temple and Xixi Wetland Park. The split front-loads the dense urban sightseeing, isolates the theme-park day so it never competes with other stops, and closes the trip on slower, scenic notes rather than another city sprint.
Day by day
Day 1 opens in the City Temple tourist area with an hour at THE CITY TEMPLE OF SHANGHAI and an hour at Yu Garden, with the Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant at the City Temple as a food stop between the sights - the only stop on the itinerary without a listed duration. The afternoon belongs to shopping and the skyline: two to three hours on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, then one to two hours at The Bund.
Day 2 stays urban but changes register. Xintiandi takes two hours, Huaihai Road Commercial Street another two, Wukang Road one hour, and Tianzifang two hours - a full day of streets, lanes and shopping with no single stop longer than two.
Day 3 is a single-stop day: Shanghai Disneyland, listed at three hours. With nothing else scheduled, the day can unfold at the park’s own pace.
Day 4 changes cities. West Lake in Hangzhou gets three hours and the day to itself, letting the lake be the whole agenda rather than a quick checkbox between other stops.
Day 5 closes with two stops: two hours at LingYin Temple followed by three hours at Xixi Wetland Park, a temple-and-wetland pairing that ends the trip on a natural note.
Trade-offs
Day 1 is the densest day of the route at five stops, and the schedule flexes inside its own ranges: Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street can run two hours instead of three, and The Bund one instead of two, freeing the evening without dropping anything. Travellers who want a lighter start can also tour THE CITY TEMPLE OF SHANGHAI briskly and bank the extra time for the walk along the Bund after Nanjing Road.
The easiest day to cut is Day 3: travellers not visiting with children, or anyone indifferent to theme parks, can drop Shanghai Disneyland and turn this into a four-day Shanghai-plus-Hangzhou trip, or reinvest the day in the streets from Day 2. At the other end, Day 5 stacks two substantial stops - two hours at LingYin Temple plus three at Xixi Wetland Park - so anyone wanting a gentle finish should cut Xixi Wetland Park and end the trip at the temple.
