Shangri-La 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

This route reads as a single arc from town and village culture into the itinerary’s biggest landscapes and back down to village pace. Day 1 sets the cultural baseline with three hours in the Old Town of Lijiang and three more in Xuesong Village. Day 2 hands the whole day to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Day 3 balances Napa Hai Yila Grassland with the short Feilai Temple stop, Day 4 leads with Mingyong Glacier, and Laomudeng Village carries the finish across Days 4 and 5. Every stop is either a cultural site — old town, villages, temple — or a signature landscape — gorge, grassland, glacier — so one theme holds from the first stop to the last.

The day split does the load-balancing. The two longest single stops sit on separate days with breathing room between them: Tiger Leaping Gorge takes six hours and all of Day 2, Mingyong Glacier takes four hours at the head of Day 4, and the lighter Day 3 — three hours of grassland plus 1.5 hours at Feilai Temple — fills the gap in between. Day 1 divides its six hours evenly between the old town and Xuesong Village, and the route ends at its quietest, with Laomudeng Village taking two hours on Day 4 and then all of Day 5 to itself, five hours across the final two days.

Day by day

Day 1 — Three hours in the Old Town of Lijiang, then three hours in Xuesong Village: six hours split evenly across the day’s two culture stops.

Day 2 — A single sight, and the longest of the trip: six hours at Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Day 3 — The pace eases. Napa Hai Yila Grassland takes three hours and Feilai Temple takes 1.5, for four and a half hours in total, the lightest of the middle days.

Day 4 — The four-hour Mingyong Glacier, followed by a first, two-hour visit to Laomudeng Village.

Day 5 — Laomudeng Village alone, with a three-hour stop that brings the village to five hours across the final two days and closes the route at its quietest.

Trade-offs

Day 3 is where the schedule flexes. At 4.5 hours it is the lightest of the middle days, and its closing stop, Feilai Temple, is the shortest on the route at 1.5 hours — a late start, a longer morning on the grassland, or a dropped temple visit all fit here without disturbing the six-hour gorge day before or the four-hour glacier day after.

To compress the trip to four days, cut Day 5 and keep only Day 4’s two-hour Laomudeng Village stop; the village appears on both days, so no stop disappears from the route entirely. Travellers who want a gentler opening can simplify Day 1 by dropping Xuesong Village and keeping the three-hour Old Town of Lijiang, which leaves Tiger Leaping Gorge and Mingyong Glacier as the only heavyweight stops.
