Why this route
The most-travelled routes through this corner of South China pair Guilin’s city sights with the Li River corridor and the Longji terraces, and this eight-day plan follows that arc from end to end. Travellers consistently favour easing in among the city’s lanes, lakes, caves and hillside parks before heading for the river, and the plan does exactly that: Dongxi Lane, Guilin Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Hill Scenic Area fill the first two days, after which Day 3 concentrates the river corridor into a single nine-hour run through Xingping Ancient Town, the Li River, Yangshuo Cultural Heritage Park, Ten-Mile Gallery and Sanqianli. The back half of the route then trades river karst for countryside and mountains — Gudong Scenic Area and Daxu Ancient Town on Day 4, the terrace trio on Days 5 and 7, and a full six-hour day at Guilin Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area on Day 6 — before Guilin Eternal Love Scenic Area and a return to Daxu Ancient Town close the trip on Day 8.
The day split carries the pacing. The two Guilin city days are the lightest of the trip at five and four hours, a gentle on-ramp to the nine-hour Day 3, the only day with five stops; from Day 4 onward the plan settles into steady six-hour days, with a seven-hour finale. The repeats are structural rather than accidental: Longji Rice Terraces, Longji Dazhai and Jinkeng Rice Terraces stand on both Day 5 and Day 7, and Daxu Ancient Town appears on Day 4 and again on Day 8, so the route circles back to its highlights instead of stacking new stops onto an already full schedule.
Day by day
Day 1 opens in Guilin with two hours at Dongxi Lane followed by three hours at Guilin Two Rivers and Four Lakes — five hours in total, all within the city.
Day 2 stays urban and short: two hours at Reed Flute Cave and two hours at Elephant Hill Scenic Area make it the lightest day of the trip at four hours.
Day 3 is the longest and densest day, nine hours across five stops. It begins with three hours at Xingping Ancient Town, continues with one hour on the Li River and one hour at Yangshuo Cultural Heritage Park, then gives two hours each to Ten-Mile Gallery and Sanqianli.
Day 4 shifts to the countryside at an even six hours: three hours at Gudong Scenic Area and three hours at Daxu Ancient Town.
Day 5 climbs into terrace country with a three-stop, six-hour day — two hours each at Longji Rice Terraces, Longji Dazhai and Jinkeng Rice Terraces.
Day 6 is the only single-stop day of the route: six hours set aside entirely for Guilin Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area.
Day 7 returns to the same three terrace stops as Day 5 — Longji Rice Terraces, Longji Dazhai and Jinkeng Rice Terraces, two hours each — for another six-hour day in the same terrain.
Day 8 closes the route with seven hours: four hours at Guilin Eternal Love Scenic Area and a second, three-hour visit to Daxu Ancient Town.
Trade-offs
Day 3 is where the schedule is tightest: nine hours across five stops, two hours more than any other day of the trip. Cutting Sanqianli frees two hours and brings the day down to seven; cutting Yangshuo Cultural Heritage Park as well brings it to six, built around Xingping Ancient Town, the Li River and Ten-Mile Gallery. Travellers who prefer shorter days should make these cuts first, since the three remaining stops still cover the ancient town, the river and the gallery.
The schedule flexes around its repeats. Day 7 duplicates Day 5 exactly — Longji Rice Terraces, Longji Dazhai and Jinkeng Rice Terraces, two hours each — so anyone content with a single pass through the terraces can treat Day 7 as a rest day or a slower second look rather than a full programme. Daxu Ancient Town likewise appears on both Day 4 and Day 8; travellers who would rather not repeat it can give Day 8 over to Guilin Eternal Love Scenic Area alone, a four-hour day that ends the trip gently.
