Hangzhou 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

This route holds together as one trip because the same blueprint repeats every day: one or two 3-hour anchors — West Lake on Day 1, Longyou Caves and Tianji Longmen on Day 2, the She Homeland Window in Jingning on Day 3, Wuyanling National Nature Reserve on Day 4, Tiantai Mountain on Day 5 — ringed by shorter 1-hour and 1–3 hour stops. The theme threading the stops together is a constant pairing of headline scenery with heritage: a lake, a scenic route, a villa and a ridge share Day 1 with a former residence, while caves and a waterfall share the later days with an ancient town, a Buddhist cultural zone, She ethnic culture, covered bridges and a temple. Followed in sequence, the route steps from the West Lake area through caves, an ancient town and a nature reserve to a temple-mountain close, changing the setting every day without changing the rhythm.

The day split is what keeps that rhythm workable. Day 1 is the stop-heaviest of the five, but only its 3-hour anchor and two 1-hour stops are fixed, because Guo’s Villa and Bayberry Ridge each flex across a 1–3 hour range. Days 2 to 5 settle into a steadier cadence of one or two 3-hour anchors surrounded by 1-hour and 1–3 hour stops, with a single exception worth flagging: Nianbadu Ancient Town on Day 2 is the only stop given no suggested duration, which makes it the day’s natural buffer rather than a timed slot. Day 3 is the breather, with just two stops, and Day 5 finishes on Shiliang Waterfall, at 1 hour the shortest slot of that day, so the route winds down instead of piling on.

Day by day

Day 1 never leaves the West Lake area and carries the most stops of any day, five in all. West Lake itself takes the 3-hour anchor slot, the Yangdi Scenic Route follows at 1 hour, and Gai Jiaotian’s Former Residence adds another hour. The back half of the day flexes through two 1–3 hour stops, Guo’s Villa and Bayberry Ridge; depending on where those ranges land, the day can run from roughly seven hours up to eleven.

Day 2 is the only day built on two fixed 3-hour anchors. Longyou Caves open it and Tianji Longmen close it, with the Root Palace Buddhist Kingdom cultural tourism zone at 1–3 hours and Nianbadu Ancient Town in between — the one stop on the entire route with no suggested duration, and therefore the day’s adjustable middle. With both anchors plus the full range at the cultural zone, the timed portion alone reaches nine hours before the ancient town adds anything.

Day 3 is the lightest day of the route: two stops only. Yunzhong Daji takes 1–3 hours and the China She Homeland Window scenic area in Jingning takes 3, leaving more open time than on any other day.

Day 4 is anchored by Wuyanling National Nature Reserve at 3 hours. Nanpu Creek Scenic Area follows at 1–3 hours, and the Sixi Covered Bridge Scenic Area wraps the day at 1 hour — five to seven hours across three stops in total.

Day 5 brings the route to a temple-and-mountain close. Guoqing Temple opens the day at 1–3 hours, Tiantai Mountain National Scenic Area takes the 3-hour anchor, and Shiliang Waterfall ends both the day and the route with a 1-hour visit — five to seven hours in total, mirroring Day 4.

Trade-offs

Day 2 is the tightest day and the best place to make a cut. Longyou Caves and Tianji Longmen each lock up 3 hours, the Root Palace Buddhist Kingdom zone can absorb another 1–3, and Nianbadu Ancient Town carries no suggested duration at all. Travellers who want real time in the ancient town should drop Tianji Longmen, the day’s second 3-hour anchor; travellers set on keeping both anchors should hold the cultural zone to the short end of its range and let the town take whatever time is left.

The other pressure point is Day 1, where five stops stack onto a single 3-hour anchor: if Guo’s Villa and Bayberry Ridge both run to the top of their 1–3 hour ranges, the day stretches to eleven hours, so cap one of them at an hour. Day 5 flexes the same way — if Guoqing Temple runs long, Shiliang Waterfall, at 1 hour and last in the sequence, is the natural stop to sacrifice. Travellers with young children, or anyone who prefers the two-stop pace of Day 3, should simplify on the same principle: keep one 3-hour anchor per day — West Lake, Longyou Caves, the Jingning scenic area, Wuyanling National Nature Reserve, Tiantai Mountain — and prune the 1-hour add-ons first.
