Why this route
This route hangs on a single thread: the Li River and the karst landscape around it. Day 1 tracks the water from Guilin’s city landmark, Elephant Hill Scenic Area, out along the river itself — Crown Cave, an hour of bamboo rafting, Xingping Ancient Town and the Yellow Cloth Reflection — before finishing on West Street in Yangshuo. Because the rafting and cave stops sit explicitly on the Li River and the day ends in Yangshuo, the scenery builds along one continuous line rather than jumping between unrelated sights.
Day 2 then changes register. With three stops and six listed hours against day 1’s ten, it swaps the river corridor for the softer countryside around Yangshuo: the village stop at Maling Drum Village, the Yulong River and the Ten-Mile Gallery. The split does two things at once — it front-loads the dense river day while energy is highest, and it leaves a lighter second day that can absorb a later start or an earlier departure without breaking the route.
Day by day
Day 1 opens in Guilin at Elephant Hill Scenic Area, with two hours for the hill that anchors the city’s riverfront. From there the day moves onto the Li River itself: Crown Cave takes two hours, then a one-hour bamboo raft drift puts travellers on the water. Xingping Ancient Town follows with two hours to walk the old streets, and the Yellow Cloth Reflection adds a further hour at the river’s mirrored viewpoint. The day closes on West Street in Yangshuo, with two hours to wander after ten listed hours of sightseeing.
Day 2 is deliberately lighter: three stops, six hours. Maling Drum Village takes the first two hours, then the Yulong River and the Ten-Mile Gallery each take two more. The Yulong River serves as a second, gentler water experience to set against the previous day’s Li River drift, and the Ten-Mile Gallery ends the route with a two-hour stretch of continuous scenery.
Trade-offs
Day 1 is the pinch point: six stops and ten listed hours leave little slack. Anyone finding that heavy can cut Crown Cave, which frees two full hours without touching the rafting, Xingping Ancient Town or the Yellow Cloth Reflection — the stops that carry the river experience. If the morning starts late, shortening the opening stop at Elephant Hill Scenic Area is the other place the day flexes.
Day 2 has the opposite shape — only six listed hours — so it is where the schedule stretches. Travellers who want a slower finish can linger at the Yulong River or the Ten-Mile Gallery, while those simplifying the plan altogether can drop Maling Drum Village and spend the whole day on those two scenic stops; families and anyone with an afternoon departure are the obvious candidates for that simpler version.
