Dali 3 Day Itinerary

Why this route

Travellers consistently shape Dali into three moves: inward, outward, upward. Day 1 stays close to the historic core — Dali Old City for 2-3 hours, The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda for 2 hours, Three Pagodas Reflection Park for 1 hour, then Renmin Road for 1-2 hours. It is a heritage day built around a single landmark seen three ways: from inside the old city, up close at the temple complex, and again in the park whose name comes from the pagodas’ reflection.

Day 2 then trades depth for breadth. It leaves Dali Old City, threads Xizhou Town, Butterfly Spring, Shuanglang Ancient Town, Nanzhao Folklore Island, Wase Town and Little Putuo Island into a single loop, and returns to Dali Old City — 7-8 hours of listed time across five timed stops, the fullest day of the route. Day 3 inverts the scale entirely: The CangShan Mountain alone, with no fixed duration, so the mountain owns the whole day. Each day has one job — heritage core, town-and-island sweep, mountain landscape — and the sequence ends on the route’s most open day rather than its busiest.

Day by day

Day 1 — old city and pagodas. Dali Old City opens the route with 2-3 hours. The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda follows for 2 hours, with Three Pagodas Reflection Park for 1 hour directly after — the two pagoda stops pair by design, one up close and one framed by reflection. Renmin Road closes the day with 1-2 hours, the most flexible block on the itinerary. Listed time: 6-8 hours.

Day 2 — the town-and-island loop. The day departs from Dali Old City, which the plan lists at both ends without a duration — a start and end point rather than a timed sight. Xizhou Town comes first at 1-2 hours, then Butterfly Spring at 1 hour. Shuanglang Ancient Town follows for 2 hours, Nanzhao Folklore Island for 1 hour, and Wase Town for another 2 hours. Little Putuo Island is the final stop before the return to Dali Old City and carries no set duration, so it flexes with whatever time the day has left. The timed stops total 7-8 hours — the fullest day of the three.

Day 3 — The CangShan Mountain. One stop, no listed duration. The whole day belongs to the mountain, which makes it the route’s most open schedule: travellers set the day’s length and shape it around the single ascent.

Trade-offs

Day 2 is where the plan strains: five timed stops plus two untimed entries, with 7-8 hours of listed time before Little Putuo Island is even counted. Travellers who want breathing room should cut one of the 1-hour stops — Butterfly Spring or Nanzhao Folklore Island — and shift the time to Shuanglang Ancient Town or Wase Town, the day’s two 2-hour anchors. Little Putuo Island, with no duration attached, is the easiest stop to drop outright; anyone pacing the trip slowly, or travelling with children or older parents, should simplify the day here first.

The schedule also flexes at its edges. Renmin Road’s 1-2 hour range is the widest block on Day 1, so trim it when the temple and reflection park run long — and because Day 2 ends back at Dali Old City with no set duration, that stroll can slide to the end of Day 2 rather than be lost. Day 3 holds only The CangShan Mountain with no fixed duration, so it is the day to shorten for a lighter finish or to stretch when the mountain deserves more time.
