Dali 9 Day Itinerary

Why this route

The through-line of this nine-day plan is the pairing of walkable heritage towns with headline landscapes: Dali Old City, Xizhou Town, Shuanglang Ancient Town, Old Town of Lijiang and Shuhe Old Town carry the town-walking, while The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda, The CangShan Mountain, Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park and the Lugu Lake stops supply the monumental scenery. The most-travelled routes through this corner of Southwest China follow exactly this rhythm — a town day, then a landscape day — and the split here keeps it legible: three days around Dali, three around Lijiang, two on Lugu Lake, and a one-stop market day to close.

What the day split achieves is pacing. Each base opens gently — Day 1 strings together one- and two-hour stops around Dali Old City, and Day 4 does the same inside the Old Town of Lijiang — before the big outings arrive: the Day 2 circuit of lake towns and islands, Day 3 given over entirely to The CangShan Mountain, and Day 6 built around three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park. Heavy days are buffered by light ones. The four-hour Lashi Lake Wetland Park block shares Day 5 with only one other stop, Day 7 turns toward Lugu Lake with viewing platforms before the timed island visits, and Day 9 holds nothing but a one-to-two-hour browse at Ancient City Zhongyi Market.

Day by day

Day 1 — Dali. One hour in Dali Old City to get oriented, two hours at The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda, one hour at Three Pagodas Reflection Park for the reflected view of the pagodas, and a one-to-two-hour stroll along Renmin Road to finish.

Day 2 — the lake circuit. Out from Dali Old City and back by day’s end: one to two hours in Xizhou Town, one hour at Butterfly Spring, two hours in Shuanglang Ancient Town, one hour on Nanzhao Folklore Island, two hours in Wase Town and an untimed stop at Little Putuo Island before returning to Dali Old City.

Day 3 — The CangShan Mountain. The mountain is the day’s only stop and carries no fixed duration, so the entire schedule flexes around it.

Day 4 — Lijiang. A compact old-town day of short blocks: one hour in the Old Town of Lijiang, one hour up Lion Hill, one hour at Mu Palace and one to two hours around Lijiang Sifang Street.

Day 5 — wetland and a quieter town. Four hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park, the longest single-stop block on the plan, then two hours in Shuhe Old Town.

Day 6 — the snow mountain. Three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park, one to two hours at Maoniuping Scenic Area, one to two hours at Spruce Meadow and a closing hour at Blue Moon Valley.

Day 7 — to Lugu Lake. Two viewing platforms open the day — Lining Eighteen Bends Viewing Platform and Lugu Lake Viewing Platform — followed by Daluoshui Pier, then the timed stops: two hours at Lugu Lake Scenic Area - Lugu Lake Rock Island and two hours on Lige Island, which leads straight into Day 8.

Day 8 — around the lake. From Lige Island through Nisai Village, one hour at Xiaoluoshui, pauses at Libai Lovers Beach and the Last Princess’s Residence, then the day’s two big blocks: two to three hours at Lugu Lake Scenic Area - Caohai and two hours at Goddess Bay.

Day 9 — the market. A one-to-two-hour wander through Ancient City Zhongyi Market is the only item on the schedule, a low-key close to nine full days.

Trade-offs

Day 2 is the densest page of the plan, with six stops between the outbound and return legs from Dali Old City. The cleanest trim is Butterfly Spring (one hour) and Wase Town (two hours), which frees the middle of the day for Shuanglang Ancient Town and Nanzhao Folklore Island; Little Putuo Island, which carries no fixed duration, is the natural first cut for anyone running long.

Day 6 stacks three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park with two meadow stops and Blue Moon Valley; travellers who want a shorter mountain day should keep the Glacier Park and Blue Moon Valley pair and drop either Maoniuping Scenic Area or Spruce Meadow. Anyone with seven days rather than nine can cut the Lugu Lake leg — Days 7 and 8 — and close with the Ancient City Zhongyi Market morning, keeping both old-town bases and the mountain day intact.
