Dali 5 Day Itinerary

dian deng pao

Why this route

These five days read as a single northbound corridor through Yunnan, a line travellers consistently favour for a first visit. It opens gently in Kunming with two hours at Dian Lake, two hours along Kunming Old Street and an untimed visit to the Yunnan Provincial Museum, then commits Day 2 to Dali’s heritage core: three hours in Dali Old City and two hours at The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda. The route finishes in Lijiang, where the Old Town of Lijiang and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain deliver the same old-town-and-mountain appeal at a different scale.

The day split manages energy as much as geography. Day 3 is deliberately the heavyweight: eight stops around Erhai Lake whose fixed durations alone total roughly thirteen hours, running from Sansheng Island and the S-Bend photo spot at Panxi through Xizhou Town, Haishe Ecological Park, Ideal State Tourism Resort Town, Little Putuo Island and Shuanglang Ancient Town. The plan then breathes - Day 4 carries a single three-hour stop in the Old Town of Lijiang, leaving the rest of that day open for the shift north, before Day 5 balances three hours at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with three hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park.

Day by day

Day 1 - Kunming. Two hours at Dian Lake come first, followed by two hours wandering Kunming Old Street. The Yunnan Provincial Museum carries no fixed time budget, so it flexes to fit whatever the arrival day allows.

Day 2 - Dali. Three hours inside Dali Old City, then two hours at The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda, the day’s heritage counterweight.

Day 3 - Erhai Lake. The longest day on the route. Erhai Lake itself is the untimed anchor, with two hours at Sansheng Island, one hour at the S-Bend photo spot at Panxi, two hours in Xizhou Town, one hour at Haishe Ecological Park, two hours at Ideal State Tourism Resort Town, two hours at Little Putuo Island, and a three-hour finish in Shuanglang Ancient Town.

Day 4 - Lijiang. A single three-hour stop in the Old Town of Lijiang; the remainder of the day is deliberately unstructured.

Day 5 - Lijiang. Three hours at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, then three hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park - a mountain-and-wetland pairing that closes the route on even footing.

Trade-offs

Day 3 is where this schedule bends or breaks: eight stops and roughly thirteen fixed hours. The cleanest cut is the one-hour S-Bend photo spot at Panxi plus the two-hour Little Putuo Island stop, which trims three hours while keeping the heavier stops - Xizhou Town, Haishe Ecological Park and Shuanglang Ancient Town - intact. If the day still runs long, Ideal State Tourism Resort Town, at two hours, is the next candidate to drop.

Day 4 is the plan’s shock absorber: one three-hour stop in the Old Town of Lijiang means a late finish on Day 3 costs nothing downstream. Travellers who prefer a slower loop, or anyone touring with small children, should simplify Day 3 to Xizhou Town, Haishe Ecological Park and Shuanglang Ancient Town only and treat the remaining Erhai stops as optional add-ons.
