Dali 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

This five-day Southwest China route works as one coherent arc because its stops alternate between human-scale places and big landscape features, and the durations spell out that rhythm. It begins with three hours in the Old Town of Lijiang paired with three hours in Xuesong Village, gives Day 2 entirely to the six-hour Tiger Leaping Gorge, then eases off with three hours at Napa Hai Yila Grassland plus a one-and-a-half-hour stop at Feilai Temple. The closing stretch repeats the pattern: four hours at Mingyong Glacier followed by a two-hour first look at Laomudeng Village, before the village returns alone for a three-hour final day. Laomudeng Village is the only stop the plan visits twice, which marks it as the place where the route deliberately slows down.

The day split keeps the pacing legible and the load even. Days 1, 2 and 4 each carry six hours of stops, Day 3 carries four and a half, and Day 5 tapers to three, so the itinerary ends on village time rather than on another long landscape day. The plan also isolates its single longest commitment: the six hours at Tiger Leaping Gorge sit alone on Day 2, while every shared day pairs stops so that no block runs longer than four hours. That structure gives each day one clear anchor and one lighter counterpoint, and it reserves the gentlest day for last.

Day by day

Day 1 opens the route with three hours in the Old Town of Lijiang and matches them with three hours in Xuesong Village, an even six-hour day split between a town and a village.

Day 2 is the route’s single-stop day and its longest commitment: all six hours go to Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Day 3 is the lightest full day at four and a half hours, pairing three hours at Napa Hai Yila Grassland with a one-and-a-half-hour stop at Feilai Temple, the shortest stop on the plan.

Day 4 returns to six hours: four at Mingyong Glacier, the longest stop outside the gorge, then a two-hour first look at Laomudeng Village.

Day 5 gives Laomudeng Village a second, three-hour block to itself — the only repeated stop on the route — and closes the itinerary at an unhurried pace.

Trade-offs

The cleanest cut is Xuesong Village on Day 1: dropping its three hours turns the opening day into a single-stop day built around the Old Town of Lijiang, a better fit for travellers who want a gentler start. Feilai Temple is the alternative trim — at one and a half hours it is the shortest stop on the plan, and skipping it reduces Day 3 to a grassland-only day, though the time recovered is modest.

The schedule flexes most on Day 3, with four and a half hours of stops, and on Day 5, with three, so those are the days to absorb delays or add rest. Travellers who find Day 4 heavy can skip its two-hour Laomudeng Village block and take all of their village time in the fuller three-hour Day 5 visit; anyone shorter on time can cut Day 5 altogether and finish in four days with just the two-hour introduction to the village.
