Chengdu 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

These five days form a single westward arc out of Chengdu and back, and travellers consistently favour that shape because every stop feeds the same through-line: a graded climb from engineered lowland to Tibetan plateau culture to ice-and-lake scenery. The route opens at the edge of the plain with two hours at Dujiangyan Scenic Area, ascends to Mount Siguniang Scenic Area, slows into the Tibetan villages of Jiaju and Suopo, then crosses the high country around Tagong — grassland, golden pagoda, monastery and a viewing platform aimed at Mount Gongga — before descending through Mugecuo Scenic Area and Siding Co to the glacier country of Hailuogou National Forest Park and the historic Luding Bridge. Moxi Ancient Town is the only stop visited twice, and it functions as the overnight hinge on the far side of the loop.

The day split is what keeps the arc manageable. Day 1 front-loads the two longest commitments of the opening leg — two hours at Dujiangyan Scenic Area, three at Mount Siguniang Scenic Area — while Day 2 eases off with a pair of one-hour village visits. Day 3 is a sampler of five short stops, three of them just half an hour, a rhythm that suits sightseeing at plateau elevation, and Day 4 concentrates the single biggest commitment, three hours inside Hailuogou National Forest Park, before a soft one-to-two-hour landing in Moxi Ancient Town. Day 5 then stays deliberately light, one hour in Moxi and one at Luding Bridge, so the final leg can absorb any spill-over from the day before.

Day by day

Day 1 sets out from Chengdu with two hours at Dujiangyan Scenic Area, the ancient irrigation works at the foot of the mountains, then climbs for three hours at Mount Siguniang Scenic Area — the longest stop of the opening leg and the moment the route leaves the plain behind.

Day 2 is the cultural interlude: one hour wandering Jiaju Tibetan Village, followed by one hour at the ancient watchtower cluster of Suopo Tibetan Village, two stops that between them carry the day’s entire sightseeing load.

Day 3 is the plateau sampler. Two hours at Moshi Park come first, then a quick-fire sequence around Tagong: half an hour on Tagong Grassland, half an hour at Muya Golden Pagoda, half an hour at Tagong Monastery, and a closing hour at the Mount Gongga viewing platform.

Day 4 is the heavyweight. An hour and a half at Mugecuo Scenic Area is followed by another ninety minutes at Siding Co, after which the route makes its biggest single commitment — three hours at Hailuogou National Forest Park — before winding down with one to two hours in Moxi Ancient Town, where the night is spent.

Day 5 closes the loop gently: a final hour in Moxi Ancient Town in the morning, then an hour at Luding Bridge before the road back to Chengdu.

Trade-offs

The schedule flexes most on Days 3 and 4. Day 3 strings together five stops, three of them only half an hour long, so dropping the hour-long Mount Gongga viewing platform frees a full hour, while skipping the half-hour Tagong Monastery visit costs little. On Day 4, Moxi Ancient Town already reappears for an hour on the final morning, so travellers can skip the one-to-two-hour evening visit there and bank the time for Hailuogou National Forest Park, the route’s longest single stop at three hours.

Anyone reluctant to stack four stops into one high-country day should simplify Day 4 by cutting Siding Co and its hour and a half, going straight from Mugecuo Scenic Area to Hailuogou National Forest Park and arriving in Moxi Ancient Town earlier. The opposite adjustment suits travellers who want depth over breadth: end Day 3 after Tagong Grassland and trade the pagoda, monastery and viewing platform — two hours combined — for a slower plateau afternoon or an earlier start on the lakes.
