Why this route
This route reads as a single arc from heritage core to alpine scenery to a quiet finish. Day 1 stacks four old-town stops — the Old Town of Lijiang (2 hours), Lion Hill (1 hour), Mu Palace (1 hour) and Lijiang Sifang Street (3 hours) — for 7 hours in total. Day 2 then turns to the mountains with Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park (3 hours), Spruce Meadow (1-2 hours) and Blue Moon Valley (1 hour), a 5-6 hour day of snow-mountain scenery. That contrast — culture first, high scenery second — is the theme that ties the stops together.
The day split manages the taper as much as the theme. Timed hours step down from 7 on Day 1 to 5-6 on Day 2 to 3.5-5 on Day 3, where Shuhe Old Town (2 hours), Shuhe Sifang Street (0.5-1 hour), the Shuhe Ancient Town - Qinglong Bridge and Jiuding Dragon Pool (both untimed), the Shuhe Ancient Town - Sansheng Palace (0.5-1 hour) and the Tea Horse Road Museum (0.5-1 hour) form a softer town day. Day 4 closes with a single untimed stop, Lashi Lake Wetland Park. The structure front-loads the dense walking, keeps the mountain day focused, and ends on the loosest schedule of the trip, which is what makes four different kinds of stop hang together as one route.
Day by day
Day 1 is the old-town day, 7 hours in total. Open with 2 hours in the Old Town of Lijiang, then give 1 hour to Lion Hill and 1 hour to Mu Palace. Close with the day’s longest block: 3 hours at Lijiang Sifang Street.
Day 2 is the mountain day, 5-6 hours in total. Spend 3 hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park, the longest stop of the day, followed by 1-2 hours at Spruce Meadow and a final hour at Blue Moon Valley.
Day 3 shifts to Shuhe, with 3.5-5 hours of timed stops. Give Shuhe Old Town 2 hours and Shuhe Sifang Street 0.5-1 hour, then take the Shuhe Ancient Town - Qinglong Bridge and Jiuding Dragon Pool at whatever pace the day allows, as both are untimed. Finish with the Shuhe Ancient Town - Sansheng Palace and the Tea Horse Road Museum, 0.5-1 hour each.
Day 4 holds a single stop: Lashi Lake Wetland Park, left untimed for an open-ended final day.
Trade-offs
Day 1 is the heaviest day on the schedule at 7 hours, and Lijiang Sifang Street accounts for 3 of them — the longest single block on the route, tied only by Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park. If the day runs long, cut into that 3-hour block first; a lighter trim is to drop one of the two 1-hour stops, Lion Hill or Mu Palace.
The rest of the route flexes on its ranges. Day 2 lands between 5 and 6 hours depending entirely on Spruce Meadow’s 1-2 hour window, and Day 3 stretches from a 3.5-hour floor to a 5-hour ceiling before its two untimed stops, the Shuhe Ancient Town - Qinglong Bridge and Jiuding Dragon Pool, add anything. Anyone who wants a simpler plan can keep Shuhe Old Town, Shuhe Sifang Street and the two untimed sights, and skip the Shuhe Ancient Town - Sansheng Palace and the Tea Horse Road Museum. Day 4’s single untimed stop at Lashi Lake Wetland Park is the easiest day of the four to lengthen or shorten.
