Why this route

The most-travelled six-day routes out of Lijiang work as a single coherent arc through Southwest China, and this itinerary follows that logic: water, mountains and old towns in deliberate rotation. It opens on the wetlands and horse trails of Lashi Lake, moves to the lake country of Lugu Lake and the Gemu Goddess Mountain Cableway, then runs through the paired peak-and-lake scenery of The CangShan Mountain and Erhai Lake, a chain of ancient towns — Xizhou Town, Shaxi Ancient Town, Heshun Ancient Town — and finally the volcanic landscape of Tengchong, closing at Tengchong Beihai Wetland. Still water is the through-line: Lashi Lake Wetland Park on Day 1, Lugu Lake and Small Caohai Lake on Day 2, Erhai Lake on Day 3 and Tengchong Beihai Wetland on Day 6, each framed by a different highland backdrop.

The day split paces that theme rather than cramming it. Day 1 is a soft opener — a fixed three-hour wetland visit plus riding that flexes from one to three hours — and Day 2 stays compact at three to five hours across Lugu Lake, the cableway and Small Caohai Lake. Day 3 is an even six hours split between mountain and lake, while Day 4 is the deliberate peak: three heritage stops that can run to nine hours in total. Days 5 and 6 then downshift, pairing Heshun Ancient Town with the Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geological Park before a single short wetland stop closes the trip, so the route ends light rather than stretched.

Day by day

Day 1 begins at Lashi Lake Wetland Park, with three hours set aside for the wetlands, followed by one to three hours of riding at the Anzhong Horse Riding Ranch at Lashi Lake — a first day that can run anywhere from four to six hours.

Day 2 is devoted to Lugu Lake: one to three hours at the lake itself, a one-hour ascent on the Gemu Goddess Mountain Cableway, and a final hour at Small Caohai Lake.

Day 3 splits evenly between The CangShan Mountain and Erhai Lake, at three hours each — a balanced six-hour day of peaks and water.

Day 4 is the densest of the route. Xizhou Town takes one to three hours, The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda another one to three, and Shaxi Ancient Town a full three hours, for a day that can stretch to nine hours in total.

Day 5 moves on to Tengchong: three hours in Heshun Ancient Town, then one to three hours at the Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geological Park.

Day 6 keeps it to a single stop — one to three hours at Tengchong Beihai Wetland — leaving the rest of the day free.

Trade-offs

Day 4 is the pinch point: three stops that can total nine hours. The cleanest cut is Xizhou Town — going straight from The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda to Shaxi Ancient Town trims the day to at most six hours — or, if all three stops stay on the plan, run Xizhou Town and the temple area at their one-hour minimums to compress the day to roughly five hours.

The schedule flexes most at the edges. Day 6 carries only one stop, so Tengchong Beihai Wetland can absorb anywhere from one to three hours and still leave the day open, and on Day 1 riders can cap the Anzhong Horse Riding Ranch at its one-hour minimum. Travellers who want a simpler plan altogether should drop the one-hour Gemu Goddess Mountain Cableway on Day 2 and let Lugu Lake run to its full three hours instead.
