Why this route
This itinerary works as a single westward corridor through Southwest China, threaded together by old towns and trade-road heritage. It opens in Lijiang with three heritage towns in one day - the Old Town of Lijiang, Shuhe Old Town (3 hours) and Baisha Ancient Town (2 hours) - then gives Day 2 to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain before turning to Dali Old City, Chongsheng Temple and a five-stop string that runs from Xizhou Town out to Little Putuo Island. Day 5 makes the theme explicit: two hours on the Fengyangyi Tea Horse Road before the route moves on to Heshun Ancient Town, after which the register shifts to Tengchong’s other faces - wartime memory at the National Cemetery of the War of Resistance, the Tengchong Thermal Sea Scenic Area, a full day in Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve and a closing day in Tengchong Ginkgo Village.
The day split handles the pacing. Lijiang and Dali each get a towns day paired with a headline day (the snow mountain; the five-stop string), and the densest block sits on Day 4 - ten listed hours across Xizhou Town, Butterfly Spring, Shuanglang Ancient Town, Wase Town and Little Putuo Island. From there the load falls away: Day 5 is a two-hour walk plus one town, Day 6 pairs a two-hour cemetery visit with the Thermal Sea, and Days 7 and 8 each hold a single stop, so the route lands softly after its busy middle.
Day by day
Day 1 opens with a three-town day in Lijiang. The Old Town of Lijiang comes first with no fixed time limit, followed by 3 hours in Shuhe Old Town and 2 hours in Baisha Ancient Town - five listed hours of town-walking on top of the open-ended opener.
Day 2 belongs to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the day’s anchor with no listed time cap, and closes with 3 hours in Xuesong Village.
Day 3 shifts the route to Dali. Dali Old City serves as the open-ended base for the day, with 3 hours at Chongsheng Temple alongside it.
Day 4 is the densest day of the eight: 3 hours in Xizhou Town, 1 hour at Butterfly Spring, 2 hours in Shuanglang Ancient Town, 2 hours in Wase Town and 2 hours on Little Putuo Island - ten listed hours across five stops, ending on the island.
Day 5 is a bridge day: 2 hours on the Fengyangyi Tea Horse Road, then the remainder of the day in Heshun Ancient Town as the route moves into Tengchong.
Day 6 pairs 2 hours at the National Cemetery of the War of Resistance with the rest of the day at the Tengchong Thermal Sea Scenic Area.
Day 7 is a single-stop day given entirely to Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve.
Day 8 closes the route with another single-stop day, this one in Tengchong Ginkgo Village.
Trade-offs
Day 4 is where the schedule flexes most: ten listed hours across five stops is the heaviest block of the itinerary. The easiest cut is Butterfly Spring, the one-hour slot; dropping Wase Town as well frees another two hours and leaves a straight run from Shuanglang Ancient Town to Little Putuo Island.
The tail is the natural place to simplify for anyone with fewer than eight days: because Days 7 and 8 each carry a single stop, ending after Day 6’s Tengchong Thermal Sea Scenic Area keeps the Lijiang-Dali-Tengchong sequence intact. Travellers who prefer a gentler start can make the mirror-image cut on Day 1 and drop the two-hour Baisha Ancient Town slot, keeping the day to the Old Town of Lijiang and Shuhe Old Town.
