Lijiang 5 Day Itinerary

Why this route

These five days hold together as a single journey from town streets into wild country. The route opens with the Old Town of Lijiang and Xuesong Village, hands Day 2 over entirely to Tiger Leaping Gorge, crosses the open ground of Napa Hai Yila Grassland to Feilai Temple on Day 3, climbs to Mingyong Glacier on Day 4, and settles into Laomudeng Village at the close. The register shifts with each day — heritage streets, then a gorge, then grassland and a temple, then ice, then village life — so the stops read as one continuous arc rather than a checklist.

The day split manages the load across that arc. Three of the five days carry six hours each (Days 1, 2 and 4), Day 3 runs four and a half, and the route tapers to its lightest day on Day 5, a single three-hour stop. Tiger Leaping Gorge, the longest single stop at six hours, gets a day to itself; Day 5 repeats the single-stop format at the other end of the scale, as the lightest day of the five. Laomudeng Village is the one stop that appears twice — a two-hour first look on Day 4, three more hours on Day 5 — so the itinerary winds down instead of sprinting to the finish.

Day by day

Day 1 opens with three hours in the Old Town of Lijiang followed by three hours in Xuesong Village — six hours across two stops, setting a town-and-village tone before the landscape takes over.

Day 2 belongs to Tiger Leaping Gorge alone: six hours, the longest single stop on the route and one of only two days built around a single stop.

Day 3 pairs three hours at Napa Hai Yila Grassland with an hour and a half at Feilai Temple — four and a half hours in total, a lighter day between the six-hour days on either side.

Day 4 gives four hours to Mingyong Glacier and closes with a first, two-hour visit to Laomudeng Village — six hours, the last of the six-hour days.

Day 5 returns to Laomudeng Village for three hours. It is the sole stop of the day and, at three hours, the lightest of the five, ending the route where Day 4 left off.

Trade-offs

The schedule flexes on Days 3 and 5, the two lightest days at four and a half and three hours respectively; a late start or an over-run elsewhere can be absorbed here without unravelling the plan. When a stop has to go, Feilai Temple is the smallest loss — at an hour and a half it is the shortest stop on the route, and cutting it from Day 3 still leaves Napa Hai Yila Grassland’s three hours intact.

Travellers who need a shorter trip should trim from the end rather than the middle: Day 5 is a single three-hour return to Laomudeng Village, a stop already visited for two hours on Day 4, so finishing after Day 4 yields a four-day route that sacrifices no new stop, only the longer second look. Those who find the three six-hour days (Days 1, 2 and 4) too dense can instead slide Day 4’s two-hour Laomudeng Village visit into Day 5, lightening Day 4 to the glacier’s four hours and spreading the village time across a gentler final stretch.
