Why this route

These ten days trace one continuous line from Yunnan province in Southwest China into Tibet, and the stops hold together around two threads. The first is a chain of religious monuments: Ganden Sumtseling Monastery and Feilai Temple near the start, Tsozong Gongba Monastery in the middle, and the Potala Palace with Barkhor Street at the end. The second is a sequence of mountain, glacier and water landscapes — Potatso National Park, the Jinsha River, Meri Snow Mountain and the full Yubeng valley of Yubeng Village, Xiaonong Pass, Yubeng Ice Lake and Yubeng Sacred Waterfall, then Laigu Glacier, Ranwu Lake, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the Namcha Barwa viewing platform and Basum Tso. The thousand-year-old Yanjing salt fields on Day 4 mark the handover from Yunnan to Tibet, and Dongda Mountain, Bangda Grassland and the Nu River’s seventy-two bends carry the route onward from there.

The day split gives that line a workable shape. Days 1 and 2 move through two and then three stops of one to three hours each — park, ancient town, monastery, river and temple — before Day 3 commits to a five-stop mountain circuit running from Meri Snow Mountain to the Yubeng Sacred Waterfall. Days 4, 5 and 6 carry one or two stops apiece — the salt fields, Dongda Mountain, then Bangda Grassland with the Nu River’s seventy-two bends — and Days 7 to 9 work through two- and three-hour stops at Laigu Glacier, Ranwu Lake, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the Namcha Barwa viewing platform, Basum Tso, Tsozong Gongba Monastery and Kading Valley. Day 10 closes the route with two hours each at the Potala Palace and Barkhor Street.

Day by day

Day 1 opens in Yunnan with three hours at Potatso National Park followed by three hours in Dukezong Ancient Town. Day 2 continues with two hours at Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, one hour at the Jinsha River and two hours at Feilai Temple.

Day 3 belongs to the mountains: three hours at Meri Snow Mountain, then two hours each at Yubeng Village, Xiaonong Pass, Yubeng Ice Lake and Yubeng Sacred Waterfall — five stops in total.

Day 4 crosses into Tibet at the thousand-year-old Yanjing salt fields. Day 5 is a single two-hour stop at Dongda Mountain. Day 6 pairs two hours at Bangda Grassland with two hours at the Nu River’s seventy-two bends.

Day 7 brings two hours at Laigu Glacier and two hours at Ranwu Lake. Day 8 gives three hours to the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon and two hours to the Namcha Barwa viewing platform. Day 9 runs three hours at Basum Tso, two hours at Tsozong Gongba Monastery and two hours at Kading Valley Scenic Area. Day 10 finishes with two hours at the Potala Palace and two hours at Barkhor Street.

Trade-offs

Day 3 is the commitment point: five stops and eleven hours in total, from Meri Snow Mountain through Yubeng Village, Xiaonong Pass, Yubeng Ice Lake and Yubeng Sacred Waterfall. Travellers who want the full circuit should keep every stop; those who need a shorter day can drop the two-hour Yubeng Sacred Waterfall or the two-hour Yubeng Ice Lake and still take in the mountain and the village. Anyone who would rather not do a five-stop mountain day at all should simplify Day 3 to Meri Snow Mountain’s three hours plus Yubeng Village’s two.

The schedule flexes in the middle. Day 4 lists only the Yanjing salt fields, Day 5 a single two-hour stop at Dongda Mountain, and Day 6 two two-hour stops at Bangda Grassland and the Nu River’s seventy-two bends, so these are the days to stretch or compress without touching the anchored stops — the Potala Palace and Barkhor Street on Day 10, and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon on Day 8, are the ones to protect. If a stop has to go, Day 9’s Kading Valley Scenic Area (two hours) stands apart from the lake-and-monastery pairing of Basum Tso and Tsozong Gongba Monastery, so cutting it leaves that pairing intact.
