Yunnan 8 Day Itinerary

Why this route

The thread running through all eight days is old-town heritage punctuated by large natural sights. The route runs from the Old Town of Lijiang, Shuhe Old Town and Baisha Ancient Town through Dali Old City and the Day 4 towns of Xizhou Town, Shuanglang Ancient Town and Wase Town to Heshun Ancient Town, and between these town stops it schedules its landmark landscapes: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the Tengchong Thermal Sea Scenic Area and Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, before closing at Tengchong Ginkgo Village. The Fengyangyi Tea Horse Road stop on Day 5 makes the old trade-route theme explicit, while Chongsheng Temple and the National Cemetery of the War of Resistance add religious and wartime history to the mix.

The day split gives that theme a workable rhythm. The opening stretch alternates town days with landscape days: Day 1 takes in three towns on short timed stops (three hours at Shuhe Old Town, two at Baisha Ancient Town), Day 2 is given over to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and three hours at Xuesong Village, Day 3 pairs Dali Old City with three hours at Chongsheng Temple, and Day 4 strings together five stops totalling ten timed hours. From there the pace loosens — two stops each on Days 5 and 6, then one stop apiece on Days 7 and 8 — so the route ends on single-stop days rather than on its busiest schedule.

Day by day

Day 1 opens at the Old Town of Lijiang, then moves on to Shuhe Old Town for three hours and Baisha Ancient Town for two. Day 2 is built around Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with a further three hours allotted to Xuesong Village.

Day 3 shifts to Dali Old City, with three hours at Chongsheng Temple. Day 4 is the fullest day of the route: Xizhou Town for three hours, Butterfly Spring for one, Shuanglang Ancient Town for two, Wase Town for two and Little Putuo Island for two — ten timed hours across five stops.

Day 5 pairs the Fengyangyi Tea Horse Road, allotted two hours, with Heshun Ancient Town. Day 6 combines the National Cemetery of the War of Resistance (two hours) with the Tengchong Thermal Sea Scenic Area.

Day 7 carries a single stop, Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, and Day 8 closes the route at Tengchong Ginkgo Village.

Trade-offs

Day 4 is the tightest day on the plan — five stops and ten timed hours — so it is the first place to trim. Cutting Butterfly Spring (one hour) and Wase Town (two hours) frees three hours while keeping the day’s two ancient towns, Xizhou Town and Shuanglang Ancient Town, together with Little Putuo Island.

The schedule flexes at the tail: Days 7 and 8 carry a single stop each, so they can absorb any overrun from the multi-stop days earlier in the route. Travellers who need a shorter trip should simplify from the back — dropping Day 7’s Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve turns the eight-day plan into a seven-day one and leaves every town stop untouched.
