Why this route

This three-day route hangs together around Yunnan’s old towns and the landmarks clustered with them, with a national park as the single-stop finale. Day 1 works through Lijiang’s historic core: the Old Town of Lijiang, the Ancient City Zhongyi Market, Lion Hill, Mu Palace, and Lijiang Sifang Street. Day 2 keeps the same town-centred shape, with Ganden Sumtseling Monastery leading the day and Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La taking the middle, joined by the Guishan Park and Yueguang Plaza attached to it. Day 3 then strips the plan down to one stop, Potatso National Park.

The split is what makes the pacing work. The first two days are assembled from short, stackable visits — no stop on Day 1 runs longer than 3 hours, and every Day 2 stop falls in the 1-3 hour band — so the towns are covered in small increments rather than marathon blocks. Day 3 clears the schedule entirely: Potatso National Park is the only stop and the plan attaches no duration to it, leaving the whole day to the park with nothing competing against it.

Day by day

Day 1 opens with the Old Town of Lijiang (2 hours), then moves through the Ancient City Zhongyi Market (1 hour), Lion Hill (1 hour), and Mu Palace (1 hour). Lijiang Sifang Street closes the day with its longest stop at 3 hours, bringing the total to eight hours across five sights.

Day 2 begins at Ganden Sumtseling Monastery (1-2 hours) before shifting to Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La (2-3 hours), with Guishan Park (1-2 hours) and Yueguang Plaza (1 hour) attached to the town visit. Depending on where the ranges land, the day adds up to between five and eight hours.

Day 3 is a single-stop day: Potatso National Park. The plan lists no duration for the park, so the day is arranged around it alone.

Trade-offs

Day 1 is the place to cut. It carries five stops, and three of them — the Ancient City Zhongyi Market, Lion Hill, and Mu Palace — take just 1 hour each, so any one can be dropped without touching the day’s anchors, the Old Town of Lijiang (2 hours) and Lijiang Sifang Street (3 hours). Travellers who want a lighter pace should simplify here first; Days 2 and 3 already run on fewer stops.

The schedule flexes most on the back half. Every Day 2 stop except Yueguang Plaza carries a range — 1-2 hours at Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, 2-3 hours at Dukezong Ancient Town, 1-2 hours at Guishan Park — so the day can finish anywhere from roughly five to eight hours. Day 3 lists no duration for Potatso National Park, so the final day bends entirely around the park; with no other stops scheduled, nothing further needs trimming.
