Why this route
This nine-day route coheres around a single idea: historic towns set beside big water and mountain landscapes, taken in three blocks. Days 1-3 form the Dali block — the old city and its pagoda temples on Day 1, a loop through the outlying towns on Day 2, and a full day reserved for The CangShan Mountain on Day 3. Days 4-6 repeat the shape around Lijiang, with the old town’s core on Day 4, Lashi Lake Wetland Park and Shuhe Old Town on Day 5, and the snow-mountain day on Day 6. Days 7 and 8 then step away from towns for two consecutive days at Lugu Lake, and a single market morning on Day 9 closes the trip.
The day split is a deliberate pacing choice rather than a listing accident. The town days are assembled from short stops — Day 1 and Day 4 each string together four visits of one to two hours — while the landscape days concentrate time in fewer, longer commitments: four hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park on Day 5 and three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park on Day 6. The route then slows on purpose at the far end, giving Lugu Lake two uninterrupted days so that its viewing platforms, islands, villages and bays can be taken at length, and it finishes with a one- to two-hour market stop that asks little of the final day.
Day by day
Day 1 settles into Dali with an hour in Dali Old City, two hours at The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda, an hour at Three Pagodas Reflection Park, and one to two hours along Renmin Road — five to six hours across four stops. Day 2 loops out of and back to Dali Old City with eight stops: timed visits to Xizhou Town (one to two hours), Butterfly Spring (one hour), Shuanglang Ancient Town (two hours), Nanzhao Folklore Island (one hour) and Wase Town (two hours), plus untimed passes at Little Putuo Island and the old-city bookends, for seven to eight timed hours in total. Day 3 strips the plan back to one stop, The CangShan Mountain, with no duration attached and nothing else scheduled.
Day 4 opens the Lijiang block with four short stops — an hour each at Old Town of Lijiang, Lion Hill and Mu Palace, then one to two hours at Lijiang Sifang Street. Day 5 pairs the longest single stop in the plan, four hours at Lashi Lake Wetland Park, with two hours at Shuhe Old Town. Day 6 belongs to the mountain: three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park, one to two hours each at Maoniuping Scenic Area and Spruce Meadow, and a closing hour at Blue Moon Valley, totalling six to eight hours across four stops.
Day 7 brings the route to Lugu Lake. Two untimed viewpoints come first, Lining Eighteen Bends Viewing Platform and Lugu Lake Viewing Platform, followed by Daluoshui Pier, also untimed; the day’s timed hours sit at the end, with two hours at Lugu Lake Scenic Area - Lugu Lake Rock Island and two hours at Lige Island. Day 8 stays on the lake with seven stops: an untimed return to Lige Island, untimed calls at Nisai Village, Libai Lovers Beach and the Residence of the Last Princess, one hour at Xiaoluoshui, two to three hours at Lugu Lake Scenic Area - Caohai, and two hours at Goddess Bay.
Day 9 is a single-stop finish: one to two hours at Ancient City Zhongyi Market.
Trade-offs
Day 2, with the longest stop list of the trip at eight entries, is the natural place to trim. Three of its stops — the Dali Old City bookends and Little Putuo Island — carry no fixed duration, so dropping the island and treating the old-city entries as a simple start and finish removes stops without touching any timed visit; travellers who want a lighter day can go further and skip the one-hour Nanzhao Folklore Island or leave Wase Town before its full two hours are up.
Day 6 runs six to eight hours across four stops, and it is the day to simplify for anyone pacing themselves for the two Lugu Lake days that follow. Cutting one of the two mid-list stops — Maoniuping Scenic Area or Spruce Meadow, at one to two hours each — brings the day down to five or six hours built around the three hours at Yulong Snow Mountain and Glacier Park and the hour at Blue Moon Valley. Day 8 offers a similar lever on the lake: its four untimed stops, the return to Lige Island, Nisai Village, Libai Lovers Beach and the Residence of the Last Princess, can be dropped without touching its five to six timed hours.
